what is birth tending?
what unique gifts does this child bring and how must we the adults transform to best support them?
who are the helping spirits dedicated to supporting this child in living their soul’s purpose in this lifetime?
how can this child best be supported in stepping consciously over the threshold of birth, from oneness into individual life?
imagine being born into a community where a trusted diviner guided your family in welcoming your soul to the planet, singing the songs of your unique medicine into the orchestra of the living, between ancestors and descendants, welcoming you into a web of belonging that included your compassionate helping spirits and all life on the planet. how would your experience have been different had this occurred? do you feel any loss or longing at not having had that? how would it change your family and community if every child had access to this as a normal, necessary complement to all the other ways communities pull together to support parents and children at birth?
in many cultures it’s been understood that adults bear specific responsibilities as the living in order to create and sustain human communities that can align with the dreaming of the earth. one of the key responsibilities is tending the threshold of birth so that each soul is supported in making the conscious (and sometimes challenging) choice to individuate from ‘the Oneness’ and incarnate in a body on the planet, for the purpose of bringing and developing their unique gifts to the earth.
birth tending is a process that ideally includes these steps:
2nd trimester:
destiny reading: divination journeys to connect with the child’s helping spirits and gather a sense of the unique medicine they bring into this life. may include recommended protocols or actions to be taken by parents / family as revealed by spirit.
ancestral healing + integration: ancestral healing performed with the specific intention of clearing the ancestral roots of any patterns this child most needs removed to support their birth and unique purpose. optional but strongly recommended. may include facilitated integration as follow-up. see tending ancestry.
3rd trimester:
birthing prep: divination to determine any unique needs this child has during the birthing process.
during labor: altar tending and divination journeys to ‘stand with the child at the threshold,’ offering any spiritual or energetic support the child needs in order to be protected and consciously choose to enter life.
follow-up, 1-3 months:
presenting the child: divinations to reveal the ritual(s) needed to introduce the child to their family, community, land and larger spiritual network, sometimes akin to a baptism, or a “Simba / Lion King moment.”
ongoing support for children and caretaking adults is available as needed. this may include spirit healing services geared specifically for supporting parents.
who is this for?
any birthing parents of any gender. no particular background, belief or experience is required. the process is uniquely divined for the needs of each child and parent.
can i order this service for my niece/nephew/nibblit/relative/etc?
yes! birth tending can be a great gift! but the birthing parent must consent. if, for any reason, you cannot receive the consent of the birthing parent, i recommend a protocol of boundary-honoring prayer to support the child during birth. please inquire with questions about this.
do you have to be ‘in the room’ for this to be effective?
no! this work can be done very effectively at a distance. for local clients (in kansas city), there are options to explore for in-person tending during labor, depending on the needs of the client. feel free to inquire further if you’re interested in that.
what about older children, adoptees, etc?
a retroactive birth tending process is often possible — please book a consultation to discuss whether this or another method may best support your child.
what about the parents?
often, during the birth tending process, guidance will arise naturally for the parents, family and/or caretakers of the child. depending on the needs of the family, i may recommend separate sessions for the adults, with the primary aim of supporting the children and their growth .
for parents with presenting challenges which seem to be taking precedence, i recommend engaging an adult healing process first. please book a consultation for support in navigating this.
