Astrology, Pyschology and the Four Elements:

An Energy Approach To Astrology And Its Use In The Counseling Arts

Stephan Arroyo (1978)

An in-depth and very accessible treatise on holistic astrology and holistic theory. I find this text vital especially for his take on the function of the elements and the modalities, and for breaking down the difference between causal and acausal perspectives of astrology.

Mythic Astrology:

Internalizing the Planetary Powers

Ariel Guttman & Kenneth Johnson (1993)

Love this book so much. A deep look at the history of Astrology, the planets and signs from a cross-cultural, mythological perspective, with a decidedly feminist bent. There are definitely some dated conclusions and perspectives that don’t resonate with me, but most of the information is informative and important.

The Dharma of Natural Systems:

Mutual Causality in Buddhism and General Systems Theory

Joanna Macy (1991)

An exploration of the earliest Buddhist teachings and what they have to tell us about a holistic, interconnected view of reality, highly recommend this work.

Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities and Software

Steven Johnson (2002)

This is a super informative and accessible work on emergence and complex systems theory, highly applicable to the functional “why” and “how” of Holistic Astrology.

The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Goddess

Starhawk (1979)

An introduction to Reclaiming style Wicca, with highly applicable explorations of the Western elemental system and many helpful practices and perspectives for holistic self-development.
